So it's a been a few weeks since I started my fellowship in Colorado and in the midst of waiting for snow to melt I've been trying to keep myself busy with other incendiary tasks. In between putting slides together for a formal presentation I will be giving in a few weeks and coordinating groups of volunteers who will be accompanying me, I've taken the time to enjoy the place where I'm at. And on more than one occasion I've have to ask myself: What the hell have I gotten myself into? Some highlights:
- I fell into an ice-cold lake while trying to cross a pretty sketchy bridge of snow and ice to get to the actual trail. Luckily it was a warm enough day that I could dry my socks and shoes in a reasonable amount of time. But I did get some nasty cuts on my hand from catching myself on a small tree.
- I got stuck on a mountainside trying to take a "short-cut" up to my sites only to find it half covered in melting treacherous ice.
- Snow-shoed for a good 17 miles all around my site. And while it was informative (and we saw a frozen dead porcupine) I felt ready to die by the time we returned to the car.
- Was kept up at night by the bongo-playing drunken antics of a few of my neighbors who were trying to emmulate Dave Matthews at 12am in the morning on Saturday.
- Managed to irritate the woman who cuts me my checks when I used her computer to look at my email and some how reset all of her webpages through no real knowing of my own.
- Had a bumblebee raid my bedroom before going to bed. It got really pissed off when it got suck in a light fixture on the ceiling where it got burned pretty badly. Then spent the rest of the night hearing it buzzing in random places at random times. Then a few hours into my morning routine it materilized on my yoga mat from no where, . . dead.
So that's been what's been going on for me. But it hasn't been all bad. I got to reconnect with an old friend of mine from my days at Campus by the Sea in Denver and my sister is coming out this week. Also I've been baking like a fiend and found a few recipes that have really made me quite happy with my limited kitchen.
